NATO vs U.S.S.R
Date / Time: September 5, 1983 / 2100 GMT
Location: Barents Sea
Playable Sides: NATO

Introduction

On September 1, South Korean Airlines flight 007 from New York City to Seoul, via Anchorage, was shot down by the Soviets. All 269 passengers and crew aboard were killed. Also a US Congressman was among the passengers. Tensions between Washington and Moscow are rising. Intelligence reports the Soviets are readying its Northern Fleet and 6 hours ago 2 Victor IIIs and the Soviet’s new Typhoon class SSBN have put to sea.  NATO is sending a carrier group to the North Atlantic. Your Los Angeles Class is the only NATO SSN in the Barents Sea at this time. Washington believes the Soviets may have fired the first shot.

Notes:

This is a precursor to war single sub action. Time compression is a big factor because of the distances covered. Users should be at version 1.03 or higher. Use reference points to mark your patrol zone. This will be part of a larger set of scenarios around USS Baltimore. Scenario 1. Enjoy!

Captain,

On September 1, South Korean airlines flight 007 from New York City to Seoul, via Anchorage, was shot down by the Soviets.  Tensions are very high. NATO is sending a carrier group to the North Atlantic. Early intelligence reports the Soviet Northern Fleet is preparing to put to sea. 6 hours ago the new Typhoon class SSBN (TK-208) and two Victor IIIs (K-254 and K-298) left port and we do not know their intentions. We just received flash intelligence that a third Victor III (K-502) will be leaving port tomorrow morning at 0300 GMT. The intelligence states that K-502 is assigned to patrol the southern approaches to TK-208’s patrol zone. K-502 will be leaving from the submarine base located in Kola bay.

Your Orders: Discover and follow K-502 and when you feel that K-502 has reached her patrol zone, break-off contact and proceed north undetected 35 to 45 miles to the bottom of TK-208’s patrol zone. Locate TK-208 and report her position.

You have 6 hours to Transit to the determined best intercept point N70.03’, E35.40’, marked on the map, to position yourself for K-502’s departure

TK-208 is believed to have very good passive haul and towed array sonar so use caution as you approach and search  her patrol zone. We believe the other two Victor IIIs are likely patrolling areas around TK-208 as well.

We expect ASW aircraft to be operating in the Barents Sea along with any ships patrolling the Kola Peninsula coast this time of year. Use caution when you approach the bay area as you can expect heavy harbor patrols.

Tensions are very high and Washington considers this act of aggression against innocent passengers and crew of flight 007 as the first shot. Let me be clear; if the Northern Fleet does put to sea within the next 12 hours, NATO may start hostilities.

Captain, this is the cat and mouse game we have trained for. Do not let them know you are there. Let them lead us to her. Good hunting and Gods Speed.

This scenario assumes that Mexico is dealing with a drug cartel based in Guatemala.  The cartel has been smuggling both drugs and weapons into Mexico.  The Mexican government is determined to stop these criminal activities.

*** OPERATIONAL: IMMEDIATE ***

ATTN: Commanding Officer, Revolución

You are instructed to initiate OPERATION SMART BRACELET.

INTEL/SITREP

The Guatemalan cartel is attempting to move a large quantity of cocaine into Mexico via ship.  Our informant tells us the ship is headed for a landing point somewhere between La Crucecita and Tonalá.

ENEMY FORCES

The smuggler is a conventional freighter of about 6,000 tons.  We have reason to believe that her crew may be armed with some military grade weapons (e.g., machine guns).  Use caution when approaching her.

FRIENDLY FORCES

Your forces consist of the Revolución and the Veracruz.

MISSION

Intercept and capture the smuggler.  If it proves impossible to capture the vessel, sink her.

EXECUTION

To intercept the smuggler, you will need to position one of your vessels or police launches close enough to her (i.e., no more than a few hundred yards) and for a long enough period of time to successfully complete a boarding operation.

You will be operating in an area with significant mercantile traffic.  Avoid damaging neutral vessels.

COMMAND AND SIGNAL

Command: Revolución
Signal: EMCON State C (Unrestricted Emissions)

Good luck.

China has established a very friendly relationship with many Caribbean nations, and has poured billions of dollars of aid into their economies.  One recipient of this aid has been Trinidad and Tobago.

This scenario assumes that Trinidad and Tobago has failed to use the money in a positive manner, although it has used some of the money to purchase older aircraft and patrol boats from China.  Not only is its government corrupt and inefficient, but it is widely believed to be supporting drug cartels and using their gunmen to commit assassinations in other countries in the Caribbean and Central America.

China has dismissed these charges and suggests that America simply wants an excuse to interfere with one of its allies.

The issue reached a crisis point when Trinidad and Tobago refused to turn over indicted drug lord Fernando Gullavier to the United States for trial.  Gullavier is blamed for the murders of several American citizens, including the recent assassinations of two DEA agents.

The United States has dispatched a Littoral Combat Group (LCG) to the waters around Trinidad.  The question now being asked is whether the United States simply plans to keep a close watch on Trinidad or if it is planning some kind of military action.

—————————————————————————

Author’s Notes

The Block II LCS is a speculative modification of the Littoral Combat Ship.  Assuming that the United States Navy would have had several years to observe and test the first eight or ten Littoral Combat Ships, it is not unreasonable to assume that some enhancements would be made to newer ships in the two classes.  An obvious option is to put four-cell short VLS systems (each of them capable of carrying 16 quad-packed ESSMs) in the two modular weapon stations.

Fernando Gullavier is a fictional individual.  Any resemblance to any persons living or dead (or in any other state of existence) is purely accidental.

*** OPERATIONAL: IMMEDIATE ***

ATTN: Commanding Officer, Mason

You are instructed to initiate OPERATION TEXAS CROW.

INTEL/SITREP

Trinidad and Tobago continues to refuse to turn over the fugitive drug lord Fernando Gullavier.  Intelligence reports indicate he has moved to a private house on the island of Tobago.  The American government has decided to take action.

ENEMY FORCES

In recent years, China has transferred a number of older patrol boats and combat aircraft to Trinidad and Tobago.  Trinidad and Tobago currently has five or six Type 37 boats, some of them armed with anti-ship missiles, and a small squadron of J-8 Finbacks.  China has also transferred a number of artillery pieces and short-range SAM systems to Trinidad and Tobago.  All of these are older platforms, some of them arguably obsolete, but they do provide Trinidad and Tobago with some degree of defensive firepower and standoff capability.

FRIENDLY FORCES

Your task force consists of DDG 87 Mason, LCS 8 Montgomery, LCS 12 Omaha, PC 8 Zephyr, and SSN 764 Boise.

Montgomery is equipped with a standard surface combat module (30 mm. cannons and MH-60 helicopters).  Omaha, a Block II LCS, is equipped with an advanced surface combat module (ESSMs and armed MQ-8B drones).

MISSION

1. Identify the location of the military Command Center and the military Communications Hub on the island of Tobago.  Destroy these targets.  This aspect of the mission is a "show of force" attack; we want Trinidad and Tobago to understand that even with powerful friends like the Chinese they cannot act with impunity.

2. Gullavier is most vulnerable when he is driving from his house to the airport to conduct business.  Dispatch the SEALs currently aboard LCS Omaha via submersible and eliminate the drug cartel leader directly or direct a helicopter or armed UAV to his location and kill him.

3. Move at least one of your vessels within the 12-mile territorial limit of Tobago.  The reference points are marked on your tactical map.  Keep that vessel on station until you receive additional orders.  Again, this is a "show of force" meant to demonstrate to Trinidad and Tobago that their sovereignty will only be respected as long as they themselves respect international law and the international community.

EXECUTION

Try to maintain the element of surprise so that Trinidad and Tobago does not have time to move Gullavier to a safe location.  Given the current situation, aircraft from Trinidad and Tobago are likely to make close and even aggressive flybys without actually attacking.  If possible, try to avoid firing on aircraft or naval vessels from Trinidad and Tobago until your primary mission is underway.  Obviously, if you are attacked, you should consider yourself free to return fire.

You are cleared to attack targets of opportunity if they appear relevant to your mission or if their elimination will enhance the protection of your forces.

COMMAND AND SIGNAL

Command: Mason

Signal: EMCON C (Unrestricted Emissions)

Good luck and Godspeed.

New Command scenario: Northern Fury 4 – A Cold and Lonely Place

14 February 1994

Jan Mayen is a Norwegian Island located in the Arctic Ocean 600 Km NE of Iceland and 1000Km West of the North Cape of Norway. The island boasts a local civilian population of 18, who are outnumbered more than 2:1 by a Norwegian Army signals detachment manning the weather station, radars and LORAN-C transmitter. In the last several hours a C-130 delivered some Air force ground crew and a small detachment of F-5s and a P-3 have just arrived.

The Red Banner Northern Fleet has two objectives, neutralize the radar and communications equipment and supplant it with Soviet equivalents; and the small gravel runway, Jan Mayensfield, which will be useful for future operations against Iceland.

This scenario is playable by both sides; however, it will be more challenging if you play NATO.

WP: You must capture the airfield, destroy all military resistance and preserve your strength and ammunition.

NATO: You must inflict damage, ensure the local fishing fleet escapes and once things become desperate, withdraw your forces to Reykjavík Iceland. No support should be expected, Norway is fighting for its life and the Airbase at Keflavik is still closed due to damage from a missile strike yesterday.

Designer’s Notes:

This is the forth scenario of a 20-24 scenario campaign. See the Northern Fury background document for further insight on the background and happenings so far. The key nuggets

· Cold War continued, no thaw in relations. Germany still divided, WP still alive and doing very well. (and while we are dealing with fantasy – the Soviet ships actually work ;-))

· The 3rd World war started yesterday. The Warsaw Pact forces led by the Soviet Union attacked NATO and other nations on a global scale, the main blow was in Western Europe fighting erupted in the Pacific, Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa. India has declared a separate war with Pakistan, North Korea attacked Southwards in an apparently independent move and Argentina is threatening the Falklands again (but has not attacked).

In earlier scenarios to this battle set, you found that the defences in North Norway have collapsed, the Soviet Northern Fleet has put to sea, and Soviet submarines are inflicting damage along the US Eastern seaboard.

  1. You should turn ‘special messages’ ON.
  2. Please respect the initial ready times for aircraft.
  3. Points are allotted for losses, more-so against Soviet loses in an effort to balance the game

New Command scenario: Northern Fury 2 – X-Ray Station

This is the second scenario of a 20-24 scenario campaign. See the Northern Fury background document for further insight on the background and happenings so far. The key nuggets

· Cold War continued, no thaw in relations. Germany still divided, WP still alive and doing very well. (and while we are dealing with fantasy – the Soviet ships actually work ;-))

· Yesterday, 12 Feb 1994, the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, opened with ominous indications of trouble brewing. Soviet and Eastern Bloc countries were represented at the opening ceremonies but many of their athletes were not present at the start of the actual events this morning. The Russian Olympic village was empty and initial investigation found that many of the athletes had simply disappeared, while only a few had flown home. Norway ordered the IOC to cancel the games and evacuate the Olympic Village.

· Norway has called up its reserves, deployed forces to forward bases and has requested support from NATO. The request for support was submitted to the North Atlantic Council (NAC) 4 hours ago.

· It is now early afternoon on 13 Feb 1994.

X-Ray Station was a long standing patrol area for NATO submarines whose job it was to keep tabs on the Soviet Red Banner Northern Fleet, in particular the major surface units and the SSBNs.  Several US and occasionally UK submarines were on this station for almost 30 years!

————————————————————————————————

Designer’s notes:

This scenario is playable by either side, as NATO your mission is to ‘detect and survive’ as WP your mission is to ‘transit and kill’.

You should turn ‘special messages’ ON,

This scenario features the USS Connecticut, SSN 22. Although in actual history the Connecticut was commissioned in December 98; the alternate reality of this battleset indicates that the Seawolf program would have proceeded as originally planned with SSN 21 laid down in 89 and 29 submarines of this class commissioned in the next 10 years. I assume that building would start slowly and only have 4 featured in the battleset, SSN 21 Seawolf, which you will encounter in the North Atlantic, SSN 22 in this and future scenarios, SSN 23 Jimmy Carter in the Pacific and SSN 24 Virginia in the Indian Ocean. The current Virginia class was created as a replacement for the Seawolf and does not exist in this battleset.
