What a week! Command-PE training at the LM Center For Innovation
We had a fantastic time last week over at Lockheed Martin’s Center For Innovation (Lighthouse). 5 days of intense training on Command PE with people from LM, USN, USAF, RAAF, Luftwaffe, UDRI & DSTL. Tons of extremely useful feedback on taking Command-PE to the next level. We cannot thank enough the LM crew for putting the event together. To everyone who attended – you have been great! Looking forward to seeing all of you again and more.
p.s. Team “Luis Script” crushed team “Joint Strike Trivia” at the Decent People. Better luck next time JSTers!

The metrics of military ops: Real-time dashboards with Command PE
On our recent Command-PE users conference in Dayton, one of the questions asked was about Command’s ability to present the information it outputs in a format that is immediately query-able so as to be presentable in real-time displays, dashboards etc. We replied that it was certainly feasible, and this is such an example.
Command-PE offers the ability to output various scenario state data and transient events such as unit positions and movements, the discrete kill-chain steps (from initial contact detection all the way to eventual kill confirmation and removal), weapon launches and engagements, fuel consumption and transfer etc. The information can be exported to a number of formats, some of which can be queried on-the-fly to populate visualizers, graphs etc.
In this example, we are running the popular “South China Clash” scenario and wish to visualize the fluctuations in fuel consumption. So we modify the configuration file to export this information to an SQLite database, which we will concurrently poll from a very simple line-chart applet (the “Fuel Tracker” window on the bottom left). SQLite is a good selection for such a scenario as it combines high insertion throughput (it can even operate in in-memory mode for even greater speed) with minimal setup hassle (no need to install a database server).
Notice the changes in aviation fuel consumption as several F/A-18Es are ordered to launch, then given a course to follow (ie. throttle goes from loiter to cruise), ordered to go to afterburner and finally ordered to return to base.
This is a deliberately very simple example, as the dashboard applet may be further tweaked to display all the other types of information that Command-PE is able to output.
Export to SQLite and MS SQL-Server is included on the next Command-PE update release.
Command PE v1.13 released, plus new editions
It took a while, but it has been worth the wait. The v1.13 update to Command Professional Edition is now available for download by existing users, and will also be integrated to the installers for new customers.
The new update includes a wide range of tweaks, fixes and improvements, but the headline feature is undoubtedly multiple-instance execution. Put simply, it is now possible to run multiple instances of Command-PE in parallel. This can offer two main advantages, particularly in the context of scenario analysis with multiple scenarios or variations of the same basic scenario:
- The multiple scenarios can be set up to run for analysis concurrently on the multiple instances, instead of sequentially. As the outputted results can be examined as they are generated, well before each analysis run is concluded, this allows much faster comparison of the results of different scenario inputs.
- It allows better utilization of system resources in modern powerful hardware (especially with lots of cores/threads available, like AMD’s Ryzen/ThreadRipper/Epyc or Intel’s new HEDT beasts), thus dramatically reducing the time necessary for sophisticated analysis runs.
Version 1.13 is also important for other reasons, as it introduces two additional editions for Command-PE:
- Student Edition is suitable for use by military academies and other teaching/training environments where an affordable, mass-deployed software solution is desirable. It is very similar in feature set to the commercial version of CMANO but differs in licensing and pricing options.
- Academic Edition is suitable for government & private-sector organizations that require Command-PE’s powerful analysis features but do not need to alter the simulation’s default data & models.
A detailed breakdown of the features & functionality available in each edition can be found on the Command PE page.
BAE Systems signs agreement to use Command
It is now official. BAE Systems is using Command for professional purposes.
A crucial appreciation of these efforts is now coming from experts at defense, security and aerospace multinational BAE Systems. In particular, real time wargame Command: Modern Air/Naval Operationshas been chosen to start a collaboration with Slitherine and its development partners.
News of this deal was first circulated during the HoW-15 opening address, and since then we have received a lot of questions on the details of the deal. Naturally there is a limit to what we can divulge due to the sensitive nature of the defense sector, but we can say that BAE’s end users have been delighted with their experience on using Command for their needs and are looking forward to making the most of it with the cooperation of the WarfareSims staff.
Command has been recently been made available officially for professional use, and a collaboration with a top-tier defense contractor right out of the gate further strengthens the simulation’s position in the demanding professional gaming & analysis arena.
